Publicist/Senior Publicist, Grand Central Publishing

SUMMARY:
Grand Central Publishing is looking for a highly motivated, energetic, and creative Publicist or Senior Publicist, depending on experience. The Publicist/Senior Publicist will be responsible for creating and implementing publicity campaigns for titles across Grand Central’s non-fiction categories and imprints, with approximately half of their annual titles on the Balance list (prescriptive non-fiction).
 
This is a NYC based role. Please note our current hybrid model is two days per week in the office. Effective in January 2025, HBG’s hybrid model will be 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home.
 
    Duties include:
  • Publicizing approximately 14 - 18 books per year for titles on the Balance and Grand Central lists.    This includes executing all aspects of a publicity campaign, including booking national and local media, managing author tours, and producing events.
  • Handling book launches for the practical non-fiction published by GCP Balance, including books on health & wellness, food, psychology, and work/life, as well as across the Grand Central list including pop culture, science, history, true crime and memoir.    
  • Developing and maintaining close working relationships with members of the press (broadcast, radio/podcasts, print/digital, trades), seeking out new media outlets and brainstorming creative ideas on how to best publicize titles.
  • Working closely with authors on all aspects of publicity, including briefing authors for interviews and accompanying authors to publicity engagements.
  • Collaborating with Grand Central and Balance’s editorial and marketing teams on all book launches
  • Strategizing media lists, creating press materials (press releases, pitch & galley letters, author Q&A’s, etc.), and pitching media.
  • Collaborating with key in-house departments, including Publicity, Marketing, Sales, and Subsidiary Rights.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with booksellers around the country, as well as off-site and lecture event venues.
  • Planning and executing author appearances and details for author pre-sell events and tours.

  • 4 year college degree or equivalent work experience
  • Minimum of 4 years of publicity experience in professional public relations or book publishing
  • Strong knowledge of national and regional media
  • Interest in and passion for practical non-fiction
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of the media, marketplace and competition
  • Ability to escort authors as needed, including the ability to travel domestically with authors when needed.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, etc.
  • Familiarity with Net Galley, Muck Rack, Podchaser and Edelweiss a plus

The compensation for this position is $59,500-70,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
